This fucking election is killing my mind and stomping my soul. American political reality is as bad as I've ever seen it, and I suspect we haven't reached bottom yet. Maybe we never will. Maybe we're destined to float down the shit stream indefinitely, splashing, sinking, swallowing mouthfuls of sewage. Hard to tell. All I know is that I'm sick of the rancid taste, and would much prefer a healthier diet, or at least something with a fresh lemon scent.I kind of feel the same way, and I'm not evening watching TV coverage (don't even have TV) or reading mainstream news. I read 2 articles in an Ohio newspaper this weekend and nearly went crazy. Everything said by politicians is full of lies, and all coverage of political events is full of lies. It is truly disgusting, and it kills my mind and stomps my soul.
In one hour my first class starts, an undergrad course that I'm TAing, Evolution and Human Behavior (here's the syllabus if you're interested). I'm taking two class as a student, Contemporary Problems in Psychology and a Statistics course, which start next week. I kind of hope that maybe I'll just tune out the entire worthless world for a semester and just focus on study and research. I doubt it will happen but it is kind of a nice idea.

Wow, the class you are TAing has quite a few interesting lectures. Especially, Class 4 and the discussion on facial symmetry. I think years ago I remember seeing a tv documentary that did a study on a similar topic, using certain celebrities as examples. These faces were analyzed/measured for their facial symmetry (I think they used Danny Devito and Cindy Crawford as the two examples..not that Devito isn't attractive in his own right). Pretty neat but I wonder to what extent that viewpoint of "symmetry=attractiveness" changes depending on your culture/environment, etc. The Marital relations/conflicts class and the cultural diversity class look pretty fascinating too. You can already see how some classes tie into others..and that's just from the syllabus. Should be fun.

Yeah this is going to be a great class. The instructors are among the world's leading experts on the subject, and they're fun lecturers.
I think I remember reading that facial symmetry is attractive across a wide range of cultures, but I guess I'll be finding out soon if that is correct.
That's neat that you're TAing a class. I bet that'll be kinda weird to get used to. Hope you enjoy your studies.
TAing is hard work if it's done right
The two TAs I remember didn't know what they were talking about; one didn't understand Doppler shift, and the other didn't understand Interest.
For statistics, buy the 'Cartoon Guide to Statistics,' by Larry Gonick and Woollcott Smith. MIT uses it. How good is it? many public libraries that have the Cartoon Guide in their catalog but don't have the book - interlibrary loan requests return nil - the book is regularly stolen.
