"Under God" was put as a direct result of a lobbying effort by the Knights of Columbus, and was justified by its ability to distinguish us from those "godless communists."
Columbus Day was a direct end-result of another lobbying effort by the Knights of Columbus. It's funny that we have federal holidays to celebrate both Martin Luther King, Jr., the leader of the peaceful movement to end racial intolerance, and Columbus, America's very first murderous slavetrader.
